It’s back! The traditional post-chapter meeting bike ride is on! Here are the details:

Time: Immediately following the business meeting on Saturday, October 1, 2022 (around 1 pm).Be sure to have a good breakfast, because we are going to roll out ASAP!

Location: We will drive out to the Manayunk Bridge Trailhead (https://schuylkillriver.org/map/trailhead/manayunk/), about 6.5 miles from Charles Library. We can arrange carpooling if needed.

Parking: There is free parking at the trailhead at Dupont and High Streets, but it gets crowded early. There are paid parking lots on Main St. and Green Lane, and parking meters throughout the area.

Route: Three possible routes, depending how you feel!
1. Manayunk (pronounced like MANNY-yunk) Bridge (pedestrian/bike bridge) to the Cynwyd (pronounced like KIN-wid or KIN-wood) Heritage Trail (https://schuylkillriver.org/map/places-to-visit/cynwyd-trail-bridge/), about 4 miles out and back. This goes through the historic West Laurel Hill Cemetery, where several notable people are buried, including Septimus Winner, Grover Washington, Theodore Presser, and Sophie Drinker.
2. Manayunk Canal Towpath – Schuylkill (SKOO-k’l) River Trail (SRT) to Conshohocken (con-sha-HOCK-en, aka Conshy) Brewing Company (https://www.conshohockenbrewing.com/conshy), 10 miles out and back. Favorite among bicyclists since it’s right off the trail. Outdoor seating, beers on tap, snacks. The towpath alternates between crushed gravel and asphalt; the Schuylkill River Trail is paved. There’s a slight hill from the towpath to the SRT, but otherwise fairly flat, with occasional road and railroad crossings (clearly marked).
3. Manayunk Canal Towpath – Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) to Valley Forge (you know how to pronounce this, right?), 32 miles out and back. This is a popular bike club ride that goes out of the city, through Conshohocken and Norristown, to Valley Forge (https://www.nps.gov/vafo/index.htm). Mostly flat, wooded areas, becomes more urban after Conshohocken until Valley Forge.
All 3 routes will start and end in Manayunk, with optional end at a local pub/eating establishment on Main Street.

Bike Storage: For those staying at Conwell Inn, they will allow you to take your (clean) bike into your room. There is room for only 1-2 bikes in their luggage area post-checkout. There are bike racks outside Charles Library on Liacouras (Lee-uh-COOR-us) Walk, before W. Norris Street. Bring a bike lock.

Bring: Water, snacks, bike lock, sunscreen, comfortable clothes to bike in, a bike in good working order!

Weather: Short of a thunderstorm or hurricane, we will be biking rain or shine!

RSVP by Monday, September 26, to Lisa Shiota (she-OH-ta!) (lisa.shiota@gmail.com), and let me know if you need a ride to the start or can give a ride.
